I know what it’s like to navigate the health maze in isolation.
In addition to Medgine’s lived experience with Lupus (her experience now spanning over a decade), she had to navigate other chronic illnesses including CIDP, Polymyositis and Raynaud’s.
For 8 years, Medgine worked as an allied health professional working in Quality Improvement. While working with physicians and clinical care teams, Medgine noticed that although there were resources and care teams available to support the quality of life of others navigating their chronic illness, there were no nurturing spaces to walk them through what and who was available to help them get back on their feet.
This is added fuel to her advocacy work.
In 2021, Medgine became a patient advisor with the Patient Family Advisory Committee (PFAC) , with the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA). This provincial board of patient advisors, with patient advisors spanning across the province of Alberta provides a patient voice to various provincial health initiatives undertaken by HQCA. She worked on HQCA’s Public Information Campaign “Working with your Healthcare Team” to support and equip those with chronic health conditions to help them better advocate for themselves.
Collaborations
Medgine collaborated with healthcare non-profits on their caregiver campaign, sharing her lived experience and insights, creating poems to inspire conversation and facilitating conversations between people with lived experience to educate the public.
